Christopher John Unera loves making personal, relatable connections with people. Whether it’s triggering laughter from a piece of branded content, inducing enjoyment at a live music event, or engaging in insightful conversations, Chris yearns to make every interaction a memorable one. To fill this passion, he has honed his skills and centered his experiences to the realm of social media content development and live event production.
Chris took his first steps towards a career in events coordinating and marketing at an early age. In 1999, the Pennsylvania Valleydawgs brought professional basketball to the Lehigh Valley. Coached by the legendary NBA vet, Darryl “Chocolate Thunder” Dawkins (Philadelphia 76ers, NJ Nets), the ‘Dawgs attracted crowds of thousands to Stabler Arena. Two years later, Unera’s father became the Vice President of the organization and appointed Chris to Director of Game Operations. Chris coordinated all non-basketball related operations for 60 home games over the course of 4 seasons.
In 2005, Chris brought his talents to Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. During these college years, while satisfying an interest in medicine, Chris never lost sight of his passion for event coordinating, marketing and entertainment. As President of the Temple University Philippine-American Council (TUPAC), Chris produced the event, From Manila to Phila, featuring stand-up comedian, Jo Koy (Comedy Central, Chelsea Lately, Adam Carolla Show), JR Aquino (American Idol, The Voice) and various other local acts. As a result of his and his team’s efforts, the group was awarded Student Organization of the Year in 2009.
The following year, Chris produced the philanthropic event, 2 Countries, 1 Cause: A Benefit Concert for the Philippines and Haiti, which was the first successful student-run benefit concert held in Temple University history. Headlined by the season 3 winners of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew, Quest Crew, the event raised funds for both ABS-CBN Foundation (Philippines) and Partners in Health (Haiti).
Upon graduating Temple University with a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry and a minor in Biology, Chris took a position as an Oncology Clinical Research Analyst at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Over time, Chris realized that being in research was not feeding his passion. Trying to supplement this feeling, he personally financed and produced The Takeover, a concert held in New York City featuring a number of prominent YouTube music sensations and local artists.
In 2012, Jo Koy, who developed a rapport with Chris when coordinating From Manila to Phila, reached out to him. Mr. Unera made such an impression on the comedian that it prompted him to hire Christopher as his head of marketing, social media chief, traveling field manager and personal assistant. Over the next year, Chris took Jo’s social media, internet presence, and merchandise sales to new never-before-seen heights. Chris was able to perform at this high level under a grueling schedule, working around the clock and traveling throughout the country.
In the fall of 2014, Chris was selected as a Creative Fellow at BuzzFeed. He currently is an Associate Creative Producer in New York City.
